Understanding the Difference Between Pet Urgent Care and Emergency Care Services

Dr. Justine Zingsheim-Nadeau

How are pet urgent care services different from pet emergency care services?

Urgent care services are very similar to human urgent care in that it's appointments for non-life-threatening conditions that need prompt attention but aren't severe enough to go to the ER, or can't wait until your general practitioner or your general veterinarian is open. So, examples of that would be vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, minor cuts, and wounds. As far as emergency services go, those are for more life-threatening conditions that need immediate, cannot-wait attention. So, hit by car, broken bones, toxicities, things like that, that require immediate intervention.

What should I bring when I bring my pet for an urgent care appointment?

The most important thing is to obviously bring yourself and your pet, but a lot of times you may be coming from a different practice, and we may not have seen you before, so we don't have your records. So bring any medical records that you have, and know any and all medications that your pet is taking.
